Please find enclosed in this letter the dates of assessments for your son/daughter in Mathematics this academic year. Prior to each assessment students will be provided with a topic list by their teacher linked to clips on the Mathswatch VLE (vle.mathswatch.com) to aid their revision. The majority of these topic lists can also be found in the Student Drive on Google. We hope this will help you to support your son/daughter with their progress in this subject.
For year 7 at the start of each unit students will sit a ‘pre- assessment’. They are not expected to revise for this as it is for us to see what prior knowledge they have on specific topics and will also allow them to see the progress made when they complete the assessment below at the end of the unit.
In Year 8 students do require a calculator for some topics and therefore assessments. We expect students to have a calculator as part of their school equipment. Calculators are available to buy in the school shop for £8.35 using a cashless card (this does not affect their ability to buy food in the canteen). The model of calculator available is an exam approved one (https://www.calculatorsdirect.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductId=549). The school shop is open during tutor times and lunchtimes.
To support students with homework, revision or general maths queries we have a maths drop in every Wednesday lunchtime for KS3 students in Q1.
Class teachers will also help students prepare for assessments and to start with these assessments will be ‘Open Book’ which will allow our students to see how useful the notes and working from lessons can be to them in terms of revision. The aim is for the students to see how they can then prepare successfully for further assessments and they can begin to develop effective revision techniques.
Having returned to traditional setting this year we will review setting termly in order to ensure students are in the right place to maximise their progress in mathematics. We will also use an average of all assessment scores during the year, the end of year assessment, KS2 scores and teacher feedback to set students for the following academic year.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact your son/daughter’s mathematics teacher.
